So begins a new training schedule! I’m both excited and anxious. Excited about starting afresh, with new goals and new challenges. Anxious because I’m wondering if my body can keep up.
Today’s goal was to do 4x400m at 2:26 each. That comes out roughly to a 9:45 pace. I’m definitely not accustomed to running that fast, but I gave it a shot, and although I struggled a bit, I managed it just fine.
Warm up: 0.57 mile in 7:16
Split 1: 2:19
Split 2: 2:15
Split 3: 2:12
Split 4: 2:20
As I started my warm up, my legs were feeling really, really tired. I was about to turn around and go back home because I didn’t think my legs would be able to do today’s run. But I stuck it out and my legs ended up loosening up toward the end of the warm up.
The first 3 splits were fine. I definitely don’t know how it “feels” to run a 9:45 pace, so I kept running a lot faster than I needed to. I think that burned up a lot of my energy because by the time I got to my 4th split, I was afraid I might not be able to finish. I gritted my teeth and pushed as hard as I could go, and I managed to get it in under 2:26. Thank god.
This was definitely one of the harder set of speedwork I’ve done in a while. But the fact that I was able to handle a work out with more intensity only 2 days after I ran 13.1 miles gives me hope that my body is getting fitter, stronger, and faster. I hope that things continue to get better =)

Do you take breaks in between the 400 meters?

I take about a 1 minute recovery break in between (either walking or jogging).
