
Ok, so it’s been over a week since this awful run, but I figured that the amount of pain I went through deserved at least a mention.
The week leading up to this run featured virtually no activity, and I was so riddled with guilt that I got myself to do a rather strenuous 5 mile bike ride the evening before this ill-fated 17 miler. I felt like passing out after the ride. Not a good sign.
The next day, I could feel that my legs were fatigued, but I had postponed this run too many times already. I couldn’t justify postponing it another day. So, off I went. The first 7 miles ticked off marvelously. I handled the hills well. My run intervals were flying by so quickly, I couldn’t believe it. But when I got into the 8th mile, I really started to feel the fatigue hitting my legs. You’ll see it in my splits. After mile 8, it all went downhill.
About 10.5 miles into the run, I found myself back at my starting point. I was so tempted to just walk back to my car because my legs were really killing me. But somehow, I managed to psyche myself into thinking.. hey it’s just another 3.5 miles out, and then just 3.5 back. That’s nothing!
Oh boy was I wrong.
What followed was 7 of the most painful miles I’ve ever run. I was literally yelping and grunting as I started each run interval. And then I would groan as I started my walk interval. At around mile 14/15, tears made their appearance. I had to satisfy myself with very slow, painful jogging and slow, painful walking.
I eventually completed 17 miles, but it wasn’t pretty. I was terribly sore that first day, and I had pain in my knees, which I haven’t had in a very long time. By the second day, most of the soreness had gone away, except for some pockets of soreness around my quads, nothing the Stick couldn’t take care of. But the pain in my knees have lingered. I’m hoping this won’t present a problem for my long run tomorrow.
